One of the most exciting events for expecting mothers is decorating their baby’s nursery. It’s such a magical time! When designing a nursery, it’s so fun to think about the design, but of course, functionality is really the key to happy diaper changing down the road!   So, first things first: find the furniture you’ll need, including a crib, changing table, storage cabinetry, a comfortable chair and proper, dimmable lighting. If you keep the furniture classic in style, then it should be able to “grow” with your child.

Then the fun part…what do you want the room to look like? Once you choose your theme and/or colors, then think about how to incorporate your look throughout the nursery. For a simple and way to extend your theme to the walls, we love to incorporate a wall mural. Self-sticking murals are a great way to bring your design theme, and colors, up onto the walls of the room. And, they’re easy to change as your child grows and develops his or her own themes for the walls!

To get you started in choosing a design that is both simple and enjoyable for your baby, we’ve chosen our top five themes and a few fun wall murals from Wallums to tie the look together!

Modern Woodland
In one of our favorite nurseries, we combined a woodland mural with modern clean lines to create a Modern Woodland theme. We paired a taupe and white dresser and all-white crib with a colorful geometric rug to introduce the room’s color palette of orange (dad’s favorite color), pink and white. To bring in the outdoors, we used a mural of an adorable tree adorned with orange and pink owls. By the way, that white crib converts to a toddler bed and then a full-size bed. To make this look your own, begin with finding modern furniture in simple colors, then implement the woodland aspects through accents and a wall mural.

Under the Sea
What little one doesn’t love the wonders of the ocean! Aquatic-inspired accents and paint colors are easy to find, and this theme is easy to personalize. You can create a seascape of mermaids, coral reefs, sharks and more. Again, start with simple, white furniture and use varying tones of blue to set the stage. When choosing a mural, consider creating an accent wall by installing one that stretches the length of an entire wall.

Zoo Babies
Animals are a common theme among many nurseries, but we especially love the Zoo Babies approach! This theme has the possibility for a wide variety color palettes, as well as the ability to mix in all of your favorite animals. For accents, be sure to include all of the adorable stuffed animals you’ve received as gifts. When using wall murals, if you’re sticking with beige or light-colored walls, choose colors that will pop and create a focal point above the crib like orange or green.

Up in Space
With this theme, your baby will sleep soundly under the stars! Soothing blue tones will work well with this motif, and it’s easy to keep many of the elements as your baby grows into a toddler and beyond. Ditch the cheap, plastic glow in the dark stars and try introducing constellations and planets in other ways.

Pick a Pattern
Create a unique room for your baby by choosing a pattern rather than a traditional theme. This is another way to ensure that you can use many of the room’s elements for years to come – it’s hard to grow out of polka dots or stripes! The color combinations are endless, and it’s easy to keep a consistent look when using similar patterns.
