Lately, we’ve been redesigning condos around Chicago, many of which have luxurious but small kitchens. When planning a kitchen with my clients, we go from the large items, such as counter tops and cabinets, to the little things they should consider to make small-space living a breeze. Here are a few ways to make any small kitchen work!
- Mount a trashcan underneath the sink. You can mount a small trashcan on the cabinet door underneath the sink to not only save space, but ensure that you’re not leaving stinky trash in the house for too long. This eliminates the less-than-stylish visual and saves space!
- Install a magnetic knife rack. You’ve bought a fine set of knives, so why not display them? Knife racks can give off a “chef’s kitchen” vibe and save precious drawer space.
- A pot rail is for more than just pots! Consider using a pot rack for large kitchen utensils, such as spatulas, whisks, wooden spoons and more.
- Use uniform spice containers. Spices that come in jars of all shapes and sizes can be a nuisance to search through. Find a set of matching spice containers you love, then transfer your spices into them to save space and add a sleek design element to your kitchen.
- Find a stylish kitchen cart. Kitchen carts can be moved around and serve as more counter and storage space. A true triple threat! Most home goods stores will have a selection of well-designed kitchen carts to choose from, so that you can find one to match the style of your kitchen.
- Finally, reevaluate what you really need! Do you really need three spatulas and four pickle forks? We think not! Take a visual inventory of every item in your kitchen and make sure that there are not doubles of items, and if something hasn’t been touched in months it may be time to consider donating it.
