An effortlessly styled bookcase is essential for every home, but achieving it isn’t as easy as it looks. What if your shelves are already overflowing with books? Or what if you have no books, thanks to your trusty e-reader? How about accent pieces? Don’t worry! We have a few tips that will help you show off your personality and create a beautifully curated bookshelf.

Step One: Books

The first step is to start with your books. If your bookcase is overflowing, then it’s time to trim it down. Consider moving your extra books to another bookcase or area of your home. Try placing your books in horizontal and vertical groups, varying the size of each one. You can also use bookends to hold up smaller books or lean them against horizontal stacks. Make sure the edges of the books are near the front edge of the shelf instead of pushing them to the back.

Step Two: Color Palette

The color palette of your bookcase should flow with the rest of your room. Stick to around three shades at most and keep it consistent. This will make styling your shelves with accents much easier.

Step Three: Scale

Start with the largest objects you have when adding additional pieces, such as sculptural pieces or coffee-table books. Settling these pieces will provide a base for the rest of your styling.

Step Four: Details

When looking for accents, remember to create textures and layers. Every item doesn’t have to look like a set. In fact, varying sizes and textures will create a more dynamic and natural look.

Step Five: Overview

When styling small areas, it can be tempting to look a bit too closely. When all of your books and accents are set, take a step back. Take in how the shelving looks overall. This will give you a better idea of any changes that need to be made.
