Traditional decor has a special place in the hearts of many homeowners. If you’re looking to update your traditional design, moving to a transitional design can be tricky. At Bon Brise Design, many of our clients are looking to do just this—make their traditional home feel more contemporary. That space in between is often called transitional design, and achieving a great transitional look is easier than you think with the help of a designer.

If you have a traditional home, here are a few things to keep in mind for your renovation or even minor redesign:

If you are keeping most of your furniture, your traditional look will feel fresh with contemporary materials and shapes added to the space in the right places. Think of swapping out mid-size items such as lighting fixtures or coffee tables with more contemporary pieces. The items can blend in by staying within your color palette and adding other new elements throughout the room in various sizes.

Once you’ve identified the mid-size pieces to swap out, you’ll want to evaluate your kitchen. Kitchens are often the most dated spaces in a home, but you don’t always need to rip out the cabinets to make an update. Instead, a traditional kitchen can feel fresh by adding a backsplash, updating flooring, or swapping out hardware. Pendant lights above the island or sink can also add a contemporary element.

In the rest of the home, take a look at how you use cultural decor. Many homes have elements of designs from around the world, but you can add elements from other areas to mix it up. For example, swap out your traditional oriental rug for a Scandinavian-inspired one.

One of the most common ways of updating a traditional home is to add color. We often meet new clients and notice that their homes are lacking in color, which is essential for any lasting design. You don’t have to overdo it, but consider adding hints of red or blue to your neutral palettes.
