If you’re anything like me, then your pets are part of the family. So when it comes to buying your next home, it’s important to look for a space where your furry friends will be safe and happy. We often work with pet owners to choose the best pet-friendly materials and furnishings.
Here are a few of our best suggestions:
1. Tough flooring.
This is an absolute essential. If the home you’re buying doesn’t have tough, pet-proof flooring, then you will want to have it installed. Cat claws and puppy toenails can tear up many flooring materials. Treated hardwoods are great, and tile and stone will stand up best in high-traffic areas of your home.
2. Room for the essentials.
Depending on what kind of pet you have, you’ll have to find areas in your new home that meet your pet’s needs. Look for nooks where food and water dishes can be placed, space for litter boxes and enough cabinet space for food and other supplies.
3. Room to roam.
If you have dogs, then room to roam is essential. Look for homes with plenty of space to play fetch. If you don’t want a yard, then look for a walkable
neighborhood or one that has a nearby dog park.
4. Screened windows.
Your cat probably loves to lounge in sunny spaces, but open windows can be hazardous. Look for a home with sturdy screens on the windows or have them installed yourself.
5. Secure fencing.
For dogs, secure fencing is a must. Even if your home only has a small yard or patio, a secure fence will give you peace of mind. If your dog is very protective of your home, then consider a fence without gaps to prevent him from barking at people passing by.
