It’s the same routine every year. We make a New Year’s resolution to keep our home tidy and organized, but by the end of February, we’ve already surrendered to the clutter. Today, we’re going to prepare you to make this year’s resolution stick. Here are our favorite three ways to get organized and stay organized:

Declutter each room
The first step is sometimes the hardest. Begin a decluttering mission in three steps. Room by room, 1) gather all of the things you know you will never touch again. This will most likely include things like papers and old clothes, so decide what should be tossed or donated. 2) Is that painting you’ve always hated still hanging? How about those old pillows? Donate them! This will give each room a less cluttered feel.

Make a plan for each closet
To stay decluttered, you can’t simply throw everything in the closet. Make a plan on paper for each closet. What will be stored there? How many containers and other organizational tools will I need? Once you’ve made your plans, make it an annual or biannual routine of going through closets to throw out the old and bring in the new.

Put your plan in plain sight
Make a weekly and monthly list (or find one on Pinterest) of decluttering and cleaning duties. Set a time for each week and month to do some light cleaning and decluttering at a time that’s most convenient for you. Make sure that it’s a time when you won’t be exhausted from a day’s work and put it off for an indefinite amount of time. Finally, put it in plain sight! Tack it up in your bathroom or refrigerator, where you and your family will see it daily to ensure that you keep up with your resolution.

In just a weekend or two, your home can go from cluttered and unappealing to always guest-ready! What are your home tidying secrets? Let us know on Facebook!
