One of the reasons why I love Chicago is the many small, historical bungalows that line our city streets. Unfortunately, sometimes small bungalows mean small bedrooms. This is a challenge we’ve had to tackle several times in our clients’ homes. Creating a space where you can have everything you need while maintaining your style is possible! From getting creative with night stands to letting in natural light, our tips will make even the smallest bedroom feel bigger and brighter.

Clear the Floor

Many of the traditional bedroom furniture pieces you have are probably large and clunky, taking up too much floor space. The more floor space you have cleared, the larger a space will feel. Swap out those large bookshelves, nightstands and dressers for floating furniture where possible. Wall-mounted shelves will have an especially streamlined look in place of nightstands or bookshelves.

Double Duty

If you don’t have room for two nightstands in addition to your other furniture, consider going with only one. You can let another piece of furniture, such as a desk or low dresser, serve as a second nightstand instead.

Let in Light

Natural light can make any room feel bigger. Avoid using dense, heavy window treatments or colors and patterns that overwhelm the space. Instead, airy coverings such as Roman shades or soft, translucent curtains with blinds will allow light in during the day and block it at night.

Let Go of the Tech

You already know that an uncluttered space is important. Some of the items you may not think of as cluttering your space, however, are your televisions and computers. These items add bulk to the room, and aren’t recommended for a good night’s sleep!  Stow your laptop away when not in use, and avoid placing a TV in the bedroom. Even flat screens can weigh down a small space.

Simplify Colors

Stick to one or two patterns in your space and a simple color palette. You can simplify it by sticking with a few neutrals and using pops of color as an accent. We love to introduce color through an accent wall and throw pillows, while keeping the rest the room in consistent warm or cool neutral shades.
