There are endless possible paint colors to choose from. Deciding on the perfect paint color and finish can be a daunting task, and it’s something we always put thought and care into for our clients. A paint color can completely change the atmosphere or your room for better or worse. To make this task a little easier for you, we’ve gathered a few of our most helpful tips:
Have a Consistent Color Palette
Color sets the tone for a room. When redesigning a new space and putting together inspiration boards, it’s best to begin with a color palette. Consider your entire home to be a unified space rather than separate areas and keep your color palettes similar throughout. To accomplish this, you don’t have to paint every wall in your home the same color. Instead, the colors should coordinate and flow with one another. You can even incorporate an alternative to paint, such as wallcoverings, in some rooms. Starting with a color palette will ensure that your end result is more cohesive overall.
Choose a Tone
If you’re keeping your current furniture and décor, take a look at the tone of your pieces. This includes flooring and other architectural elements as well. Noticing if you have lighter or darker and cooler or warmer pieces will help you coordinate your color palette. When it comes to your large pieces, such as sofas or flooring, choosing a slightly contrasting color will help the room feel more open. For example, if you have dark, cool flooring, consider light, cool paint colors.
Consider Your Lighting
While we all long for large windows that allow for natural light, this isn’t the case for every room in our homes. When selecting a paint color, you need to consider your lighting. In rooms with mostly natural light, the paint color you choose will most likely look just as it does on the paint chip.
If most of your light comes from light bulbs, you will need to be more careful. Artificial lighting can affect the look of the undertones of your paint. To avoid a surprise color, test the paint on the wall. Check the color at various times throughout the day to see what it looks like in each kind of light.
