Recently, Bon Brise Design announced some exciting news. Our principal designer, Nancy Snyder, is opening a new office in St. Petersburg, Florida! Not only did she organize a move for her own home into a Chicago condo and a Florida home, she’s also coordinated the opening of a second location of Bon Brise Design—and we all know any move isn’t easy.

Whether you’re upgrading to your dream home down the street or moving to a chic condo across the country, moving can be stressful and time consuming. Today, we’re sharing a few of the most common moving mistakes. Avoid them, and you’ll save yourself untold amounts of time and stress!

Mistake #1: Packing Everything
Moving into a new home is a fresh start. That means it’s time to reflect on which items–from furniture to clothing–should come with you to your new home. Take time to evaluate what you really need and what holds true value to you. Not only does this give you the opportunity to update your décor in your new home, but it also makes the move easier. The fewer boxes, the better!

Mistake #2: Unorganized Storage
Your fine antiques and china deserve to be carefully packed and well-protected for your move. That means not packing them with old shoes. Make sure each box is organized and all boxes are packed with like items only. This is a daunting task, but you will find that it makes packing and unpacking much easier.

Mistake #3: Untitled Boxes
Remember that china? In an unmarked box, it’s likely to be plopped on the ground at some point.   Every single box should be labelled with the room it goes in at your new home and what’s inside. If you love to organize, consider numbering your boxes and making a manifest of what’s in each box. This will make it easier to keep track of your belongings during a hectic move.

Mistake #4: Decorating Before Unpacking
There is a way to decorate before fully moving in… consider working with an interior designer so that you can have your entire home’s design planned before moving in!  You’ll know what the end result is going to look like so that you can unpack with purpose.  However, when you first move in, focus your energy on unpacking and cleaning. It’s best to begin decorating when you have a neat and tidy home.
