Sideboards are a classic piece of furniture that many of my clients seem to forget about! They come in many styles and sizes, from ornate and traditional to sleek and mid-century.
Whatever your preference, sideboards are great for storage, and their large surface areas make them a great place to display the accents you love.
Styling sideboards can be tricky, however, as they can often look too cluttered or clunky if you aren’t careful. Check out our tips and ideas to gather inspiration for putting yours together!

Create just the right amount of symmetry.
You don’t have to have one of everything on each half of your sideboard. Creating symmetry here is more about taking into account the visual weight of each item to balance the
decor on either side. The traditional sideboard featured above finds symmetry in complementing the amount and size of the accents on either side.
Make it practical.
A sideboard can also be practical for entertaining. Keep it clear of accents and it can double as a buffet, a bar, or storage for plates and glassware. Even on evenings when you’re just
cooking for the family, a sideboard can be useful for holding your everyday dinnerware.
Place a gallery wall behind it.
If you’ve made your sideboard a practical serving station, you can still add personality by creating a gallery wall behind it. Gather photos or artwork in similar color palettes or styles, map them out, then hang them up for instant personality.
Let artwork shine.
If a gallery wall isn’t your style, a single piece of artwork can shine above a sideboard. Try hanging a large-scale painting behind it and use accents that won’t detract from it, such as
small decorative bowls or a plant.
Hang a mirror.
Make your dining room appear even larger and brighter by hanging a mirror above your sideboard. Find a style that matches the style of your home, whether that means a frame
that’s modern and sleek or delicate and intricate.
