Design Trend: Open Shelving

As of late, open shelving is all the rage in interior design. Open shelving is going beyond just bookshelves. Kitchens are beginning to feature open shelving to store dishes and cookware. You may be wondering what I mean by open shelving. Open shelving units are cabinets with no doors, or shelves that are just ledges on the wall, with no sides.

Why Open Shelving?

I know what you’re thinking, “Why would I want people to be able to see the inside of my cabinets?” Open storage gives an organic vibe to the interior and brings things out into the open. Some people feel that cabinet doors enclose a space. Look at it this way; if you openly display your dishes, you have no choice but to keep them neat and organized!

There are a few benefits to open shelving. One in particular is height. The design of the space is given more height when items are openly displayed. One’s eyes are drawn from the bottom of the wall to the top, to see what is sitting on the shelves. Shelves that are against a backsplash, texture, or brick carry the design upward, extending its height.

Open shelving also is a great way to feature your decorative bowls, pots, cookbooks, or plates. When you’ve got it, flaunt it! Displaying these household items may also add a splash of color to the space. Integrate open shelving into your home to take full advantage of an open floor plan.
