Every home starts out with a few eyesores. It doesn’t matter if you live in a high-rise condo or a three-bedroom home. You most likely have cords, outlets, or other exposed elements that disrupt the flow of your home’s design. However, you don’t have to live with them! There are ways to conceal these problems around your home. All it takes is a little creativity and handy work.

Whether you want to hide pesky cords or disguise exposed pipes, there is a design trick for everything. Here are a few tips to start with:

Radiator

Concealing a radiator isn’t always possible, but there are ways to safely make it into a functional piece of furniture. If you can’t cover it with screening, then make sure the color of the radiator matches the wall behind it.  Consider pairing it with a stone shelf above, so that lovely accent items on the shelf distract the eye away from the radiator below.

Popcorn Ceilings

If you think you’re stuck with popcorn ceilings, you’re not! It’s possible to conceal it with shiplap or wooden planks, or even drywall over it. If this isn’t possible, hire a professional to scrape the popcorn finish off the ceiling.  This is a messy project, but it’s worth it.

Litter Box

We love our furry friends, but no one wants to walk into a home and see a litter box in the entryway, living room or powder room. If you don’t have a laundry room or utility closet where you can leave your cat’s litter box, try looking for an attractive litter box that matches the style of your design. There are many options out there that look like furniture and not plastic bins. Or consider creating a space beneath a vanity where the litter box can go.  And by all means, keep the box and the area clean and odor free.

Electrical Cords and Devices

Electrical cords, WiFi modems, and cable boxes seem to be everywhere in our homes these days. However, there are many clever ways to hide these items. When designing living rooms and media rooms, we plan to pass cords through the wall, but that’s not always an option. You can also try cord concealers, which are paintable to blend in with your wall color. For small modems and charging devices, we look for hollowed out books and decorative baskets to hide them.
