If you’re part of the maker community, then you know how important it is to have a space where you can let your creative juices flow freely. While usually in a more communal place, you can create your own in-home maker space, so you are completely ready when inspiration hits! With careful planning and the right pieces, you can have a special area that is as Pinterest-worthy as what you create.
Use a large, sturdy table.
That little secretary desk you have in the corner is great for a small laptop, but not for a maker space! It’s time to get a large, sturdy work table where you have plenty of space to lay out your supplies. Multi-functional pieces with built-in shelves or drawers are preferable for storing supplies that are not in use.
Create a storage system.
It’s time to ditch those old filing cabinets and plastic containers. Try open shelving with decorative baskets and boxes that are neatly stacked. For larger items, you can use a sideboard or set of drawers that match the style of your decor.
Add electrical outlets.
These days, we all need ready access to as many outlets as we can get. Charging our devices alone takes a couple, and you’ll want to be sure to have availability for a printer, hot-glue gun, soldering iron, or any other tool you need to complete your project. If you don’t have enough outlets in your space already, you can add a power strip. Just make sure your circuit doesn’t have any major appliances already associated with it, so that you can run several tools at once.
Color coordinate.
Every maker space needs a little color, right? Even if your home is dominated by a neutral color palette, your inspiration nook should be a place to experiment with color. Try color coordinating art supplies or using a color palette that functions as an organizational tool.
Make it yours.
While it’s important to make the space livable and functional for other purposes it might serve, don’t be afraid to add touches of your personality to the decor. Photographs or a display of some of your projects can really make the space your own. The personal touches will make it all the more comfortable for you to spend your free time there.
