Arranging pictures or art on your walls is one of those things that you are either really good at or not. For the most part, it takes a good eye to see which placement will work best for each piece. However, there are a few tips out there that can make this task a whole lot easier, and a lot more fun!

Plan before you hang

Avoid the frustration that comes with deciding on an arrangement, hanging it, then realizing you don’t like it and starting all over again. To make this task a whole lot easier, take the pieces you want to use in your arrangement and use kraft paper to trace each one out. When you’re done, tape the pieces of kraft paper on the wall with painter’s tape. This makes it much easier to tell if you like the arrangement or not before you commit to it.

Above your couch

By hanging a larger piece directly above your couch, you ultimately avoid hanging it too high. You’ll want the center of the image to be eye level, so keep in mind that people in your living room will more than likely be sitting. This makes hanging artwork, or a family portrait above your sofa almost like a no-brainer.

Level at the middle

If you are hanging multiple pieces in a grouping or around a room, avoid leveling them at the bottom of the frames. Instead, try leveling them at the middle of the piece for a better display. In most cases, the perfect height at which to hang art is 57″ to the center of the picture or grouping. This is the measurement that museums and art galleries typically use.

Pull everything together

When you incorporate artwork into your home, you want to be sure it complements the room you want to put it in. Artwork and other home décor items work together to create a visual story. Make sure the pictures or artwork you want to use work well with your molding and shelves. You can also hang artwork in front of bookcases to make the shelves and ledges a part of your decorating story.
