To personalize our homes, we often stick to the same tired methods. Family photos are hung on the walls, awards are up on a prominent shelf, or you may not have any personal touches at all. As an interior designer, I know that adding personal touches is essential to making a space feel like your own. To accomplish this, we get to know our clients on a personal level and together, we select elements reflecting their personality. When designing your own home, however, it can be easy to overlook a personal touch. Here are a few unexpected ways to get started on adding a bit of you back into your space!
Represent your hobby
You spend so much time on your hobbies, you should show off your passion for them in your home. In the photo above, my client had a love for sailing, so we chose to showcase an antique sailboat in the dining area. It’s a wonderful statement piece for the room due to its size and detail. For your own home, whether your hobby is music, golf, painting, or fishing, display a piece of equipment or a visual representation as an accent in your décor.
Try a DIY project
Get the family together to create something of your own! There’s a DIY project out there for any room. You can sew a pillow cover for your living room from a treasured tee shirt, create an abstract painting, or even take it a step further and make your own coffee table.
Show off family textiles
Many of us have vintage blankets that are hidden away in a linen closet or storage bench. It’s time to let them breath! Try leaning an antique ladder against the wall and draping your unique or intricate blankets every few steps. This will serve as a large statement piece for your space while representing your family’s history.
Commission a custom painting
A custom painting is not only a great way to add a personal touch, but it will also become a family heirloom. Choose a meaningful theme or subject, such as scenery from your hometown or a family portrait. When you receive the piece, hang it in a prominent place to make an impact on the space. Time to clear off the mantle!
