Since the late 19th century, impressionism has dawned the walls of many homes and become one of the world’s most respected forms of painting. We often incorporate pieces from a local artist, Kristin Hosbein, into our projects. However, although many of our clients are drawn to the beauty of impressionism, they don’t know how to choose the perfect piece for their home. When choosing a piece of art with one of our interior design clients, we have a few things to consider.
Before we dive in, here’s a rundown on impressionist art. Famous impressionists, such as the Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Mary Cassat, popularized the form of painting primarily in the 1870s and 1880s. Their paintings are characterized by small and visible brush strokes, an emphasis on the depiction of light, open composition and dynamic movement. Although it began and came to fame in Paris, impressionism is now respected and practiced worldwide.
To help guide you through your own selection process, we’ve chosen some of our best advice for finding just the right piece.
Pay Attention to Color
Before heading out on your art hunt, look around the room and write down the your favorite colors and tones of the room. Warm or cool? Bright or neutral? Is there is color your particularly love? Impressionist art has lovely depictions of color and light. Keeping the color palette in mind help you choose a piece that fits right in. For example, if colors of peach and yellow stand out to you, a painting of a sunset could be the perfect addition.

Choose a Subject Matter
Once you’ve chosen the room and know your color palette, think of a subject matter that you can envision in the room. For a reading nook or office, a relaxing piece depicting the open sea would be appropriate. In a living room, you may be more interested in a landscape of your favorite place or a portrait that can serve as a conversation piece.
Think of Placement
Placement is important when selecting any style of art. Knowing the placement within the room will help you determine the appropriate dimensions of the painting, as well as if you will need to rearrange furniture or other décor before hanging your piece.
Choose What Stirs Emotion
The final and most important step in choosing a piece of art of selecting a painting that inspires you, brings joy or simply makes you feel. Taste in art varies widely, but there is a style out there for everyone and a piece that evokes every emotion or memory. Before purchasing a painting, ask yourself how it makes you feel and if it makes you feel. When you see the right one, you’ll know it!
