Here in Chicago, new condominium developments are rising and old buildings are being revamped! We’re partial to the look and feel of these urban living spaces, but all too often we see new homeowners begin designing their new home as if it were a full house. In our years of designing condos, we’ve compiled our top considerations when decorating a condo:
- Minimize belongings
If you’re starting out as a new homeowner, you may not have many pieces. That’s great! In a condo, it’s important not to overwhelm the room with an abundance of decor and furniture. Let the room breathe. If you’re downsizing, take into account which pieces you truly love and serve both form and function. - Shrink down the furniture
If you’re investing in new pieces altogether, opt for smaller pieces. For example, rather than a full floor-to-ceiling bar, instead consider a bar cart. A large, traditional sofa with rolled arms can instead be a sleeker, modern design which has the appearance of using less space as well. - Be careful with patterns
Patterns a great way to bring texture into an otherwise bland room. When introducing patterns through textiles, flooring or wallpaper, use caution. You don’t want to overwhelm the space! When using wallpaper, stick to accenting only one wall. To brighten up bedding, try bold throw pillows. - Use multi-purpose furniture
This one speaks for itself. If you purchase an ottoman, make sure it can store blankets or linens. Thinking of buying that large popcorn maker? Stop right there! Try to only buy kitchen appliances and furniture that can serve more than one purpose.
