Old styles are becoming new again in 2016! We’ve seen a resurgence in pieces reminiscent of midcentury styles, and we’re loving it. A wonderful way to incorporate character and a unique, refined style into your home is through the use of vintage furniture. Today, we have 5 dos and don’ts to make vintage furniture shopping that much easier!
First, let’s differentiate between vintage and antique. Generally speaking, an antique is thought of by trade standards to be a piece that is 100 years old or more. However, there is no law stating how antiques should be labeled, so it’s important not to be fooled by the label of antique. The trade standard on vintage pieces are that of being over 50 years old, but less than 100. This is not a common standard in many furniture stores. Instead, many vintage pieces are simply pre-1980s.
Now, let’s get started!
- Do look for good bones
You may find a wonderful piece, such as a chair or ottoman, that looks a little rough around the edges. You hate the fabric, it’s stained and the wood may not be presentable. However, don’t overlook the power of reupholstering and refinishing! It’s often easy to turn a vintage find into a great piece. - Don’t let the vintage label fool you
As mentioned above, there are not universal trade rules on what is and is not vintage. Look through local magazine listings or Yelp! to find reputable shops that sell legitimate, high-quality decor and furniture. - Do think out of the box
Repurposing items is a great way to get more bang for your buck. Not many homes use a record player anymore – so turn it into something else! A low-standing, wide record player can become a TV stand, or a credenza can become a dry bar. - Don’t be afraid to bargain
In fact, it’s expected by many shop owners! Look up a few negotiating techniques, shop around and know the general price point for the items you’re looking for before you begin shopping. - Don’t forget the classifieds
Estate and garage sales can be great places to find what you’re looking for. You just have to be willing to dig!
