A rug can be one of the most daunting purchases when curating your home decor. They’re often pieces we plan to have in our homes for years and are well worth the investment. Bold bedrooms can become softer with a neutral rug, and even the blandest of living rooms can come to life with the right rug. Before heading out to your local shops, here are five questions you need to ask yourself to choose the right rug:

Will it be in a high or low traffic area? A fine Persian may not be your best bet for an entryway or kitchen. Be sure to take note of whether the area has a high or low traffic before taking the plunge with an expensive purchase. Synthetic fibers are often best for entryways, kitchens and children’s rooms.

How easily can it be cleaned? If the rug is in a high traffic area, be sure to ask about cleaning requirements for it. In a bedroom or study, a harder-to-clean rug won’t be an issue, but the dining area is another story.

What is your personal style? Bold? Neutral? In between? There’s a rug for everyone, but evaluate your home and your favorite pieces to get a sense what your personal taste truly is. Maybe there are colors or patterns you tend to favor most that can guide you in towards the best purchase.

Is it timeless? Rugs are often one of the more expensive pieces in a home, so you’ll want one that is as timeless as can be. While no piece is completely unsubjected to time, it’s best to avoid current trends and stick with what you love. For example, plaid is in this season – but you’ll regret that lumberjack rug by spring!

What is the purpose of the rug? Most rugs serve one of two purposes (or both): to provide a softer, warmer walkway or simply for a stylish accent. This is where you want to decide if you want natural or synthetic fibers. Both can be nice and plush, but more often synthetic fibers have that baby soft feel we love.

A rug can truly transform any room! We hope that after asking yourself these five questions, you choose a beautiful piece that will be in your home for years to come. Still have questions? Schedule a two-hour consultation with Bon Brise Designs, where we can answer all of your design questions!
