4 Ways to Treat Bay Windows

Deciding how to dress a bay window can be difficult. Multiple windows can make it tough to even know where to begin.  Luckily, we’ve put together a few ways to dress your bay windows with ease!

Get the Best Out of Your Bay Windows

Drapery panels.

Drapery panels are a traditional treatment for your bay windows. The question is how many of them to use?  The answer is:  it depends!  If you have a window seat within your bay, and wall space on either side of that at the same dimension as the rest of your room, you can frame that window seat with a nice, full drapery panel on either side.  If there’s floor space within your bay, and you’ll have, say, two chairs there, you can either do four drapery panels (one between each window and at either end), or you could use two just at the outside edges of the bay.

Some style basics: Hang the curtain rod about two inches below the crown molding to visually raise the ceilings in the room.  If you’re style is more contemporary you can add a fabric tape or a braid to the inside edge of each panel or use two colors of silk: one for the drape body and one at the top or bottom of the panel.

A contemporary valance.

Valences can be used alone or paired with other window treatments for a layered look.  Opting for a valence only is a great solution to make any room look more open and inviting. For more casual rooms try using shutters with a fabric valence on top. For more formal spaces try out a fixed valance with shades underneath for added privacy.

Roman shades.

For a functional yet elegant look, consider Roman shades.  Shades frame your window and  provide color and texture in the room.  There are many several styles to consider, including Flat Roman, Hobbled, or Butterfly, so take a look online to see which style suits your room best.
