Why go out with the old and in with the new when you can have both! At Bon Brise Design, many of our clients want to upgrade their homes to a more modern look, while keeping their favorite pieces and avoiding too much construction. We love the modern style of Casa Spazio and have used their pieces in a few of our past projects. Today we’ve teamed up to give you three ways to seamlessly integrate a modern look into any space to achieve the perfect mix!

Keep the Integrity of the Original Home Design
It can be tempting to completely overhaul a room during a redesign, to the point of stripping off trim and covering old flooring – but wait! We love keeping the original touches of a home, such as doors and doorknobs, crown molding and baseboards and hardwood flooring. Simply refinishing these elements can help meld the old with the new. Modern furniture often slides right in with traditional home elements. For example, in the room above, the trim and original flooring are still intact, but the all-white modernity of the headboard and side table makes the room feel more modern.

Use Mix-Matched Accessories
Whether it’s vintage artwork or an antique lamp, traditional accents can soften the strong lines of modern furniture. For example, surround a minimalist dining room table and set of chairs with traditional artwork or floating shelves adorned with vintage books. However, make sure to keep the other non-modern elements within the same style. Stick to melding two styles together, not three or four!

Stick With Your Color Palette
When introducing new, large pieces of furniture stay within your color palette. This will not only help the piece blend in with surroundings, but it will also make choosing a piece far easier. This is especially important when you’re only updating one to two pieces within the same room. If your palette is neutral, try going with a light brown or tan. For colorful palettes, try soothing the room with a soft blue piece. The color of the moment in modern furniture, however, is white! You can’t go wrong with a simple white couch or console table.
