Over time, furniture can get old, worn, or out of style. When creating an interior design for any space, the first step is to look at what pieces of furniture you already have and think of how they can be incorporated into the design. You may be wondering, “What if I have furniture that doesn’t work with the design I’m going for?” The solution is simple.
Make it work! Buying all new furniture and décor can quickly get expensive and is not at all ‘green’. Save yourself some money and give your furniture a makeover to update it and integrate it into a new interior design!
Here are three easy steps to revamp your furniture. All you need is a little elbow grease!
Repaint
Repainting a table, nightstand, chair, or desk, will make it look brand-new. This will cover up any paint chips or dents and give the piece a bit of a facelift. Keep in mind that a new paint job can revamp your furniture and help it fit into your new design without robbing your wallet.
Repurpose
If you no longer have a use for a piece of furniture, turn it into a piece of furniture you do need or want! Have an old dresser you’re unsure of what to do with? Repaint it, take the drawers out, and turn it into a chic storage unit for books, dishes, or maybe a candle collection! Want to get rid of your old coffee table? Turn it into a modern ottoman. The possibilities are endless. Get creative! After all, that’s what interior design is all about, isn’t it?
Reupholster
Reupholstering furniture will give it an entirely new look. For simple jobs, all it takes is some new fabric and a little time! For example, change the fabric on the seat cushions of your dining room chairs. Choose a new colored or pattern fabric and, armed with your screwdriver and staple gun, recover the cushions. You can also do this with the cushion on a bench, for example at the end of the bed or nestled into a bay window. Recovering a chair or sofa will likely need to be done by an upholstery firm, but will be well worth the effort.
Sometimes we overlook the easiest ways to reuse the furniture we already own. Don’t drop loads of money on new furniture-Take advantage of what you have and implement it into your space!
