A key thing to keep in mind is your color palette. Pastel tones inspired by nature were all the rage, with pale greens, sky blues and rose pinks in every room. To compliment the patina of the wood tones seen throughout an older home, the warm pastels were used extensively…in rugs, in the upholstery and drapes, and even on the ceilings. And more than using only solid tones, think about using wallcoverings to create this stately look.

So many people love watching the PBS series Downton Abbey, not only for the story line, but also because the fashions and home styling evoke an era of grandeur. So how might we capture some of that elegance in our modern-day homes? Well, you could buy it–the show’s producers now have about 250 pieces of furniture and accessories available for sale. Or you could add some special touches to a room to bring about that feeling of an English estate.

I often talk with people who neglect to decorate their bedroom, telling me that no one sees it so it’s not a high priority. I tell them that decorating your bedroom is perhaps more important than anything…”you’re worth it!” Your bedroom can be a relaxation zone for you, a sanctuary. Adding multiple levels of lighting and plush lines will complete the feeling of tranquility.
